The Pixelbook Pen allows pressure-sensitive drawing, much like the Surface Pen and Apple Pencil, but it's not nearly as good. Sarah Tew/CNET The Pen's less exciting than the Pencil It doesn't offer any protection to the Slate, either. And it attaches by sliding the Slate into rubberized brackets that hold the tablet in place, which feels less elegant and secure than Google's keyboard. It pairs via Bluetooth and needs to be charged separately. But it doesn't fold back to enable the Slate to be used as a tablet, which means it'll have to be removed. The G-Type from Brydge ($160) turns the Pixel Slate into a clamshell laptop and feels great to type on. And it's an odd folio case, too: the plastic keyboard cover seems to slide across the Pixel Slate's display when closed. But unlike Apple's new iPad Pro keyboard, this isn't lap-usable at all. The case attaches through a magnetic connector on the side of the Pixel Slate, powering the keyboard. The keys are round and backlit, have a satisfying mechanism, and are generously spaced. Google's own Pixel Slate Keyboard ($200) is a lot like the Microsoft Surface Pro keyboard: it's meant to sit on a desk, and its rear cover turns into a magnetic adjustable stand. Sarah Tew/CNET How's the keyboard? Great, but there are two choices Finally remember these are QUICK compared to MacOS or Windows as the OS is very light. The Brydge G-Type keyboard is great, but doesn't automatically pair. Android and Linux integrates beautifully for notifications and use. UI is slick and all launched from a single interface. If your life is around a browser, you'll find brilliant full chrome browser, and the option to load Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi full browsers using the Linux part. It can all be done, but you need to learn the tricks. It is simple, but also misses some obvious screen shot and copy / paste tools. Great combo.Ĭhromeos will not be for everybody. So a tablet, a laptop, and a screen size good enough to work for a full day. This means you can attach any peripherals - a usb c port extender works fine. A different approach to iPads (open and not closed) - two USB C ports - both can charge. With Linux, Android and full Chrome browser this is a wicked mix of useful applications, and the ability to run full office software like Softmaker (linux) MS Office (Android light version) games video (Netflix, Prime, IPTV etc). You can get a week heavy use from a single charge. You can daisy chain charging from the tablet to the keyboard (with optional cable). Battery life is not as long as advertised - but then I have used it as a laptop with intensive use. Does everything smoothly and allows gestures. Black keys show finger grease a bit, but it can easily be cleaned. Slightly spongy but my typing speed / accuracy was very good. Simple slide into the clamps and you have a perfect laptop. This is excactly the same coloure as the tablet. You get a full backlit keyboard with the Brydge accessory. battry life is OK, you would need to lower the screen brightness to get the longer times advertised. The picture is bright QHD type resolution. The front firing speakers give amazing sound. Whilst this means a little slower than a full i5 (only 2 cores / 4 threads) it is still snappy and of course being native Google everything works slickly. Slate Chromeos Tablet is a slick and well made device using 8th Generation i5 mobile processor.
